jelknerYesterday I met with Gaberiel from NSS and Yolanda from DNOVA Council to talk about a Solidarity Economy Teach-In at GMU April 2027. I offered to Yolanda that we involve our young folks (my students and her Brotherhood Empowered members) in planning a Solidarity Economy focused 1/2 day workshop for the event. Today I'll be finalizing preparation for start of school next Monday. No blockers.11:00

dcammuewe have been running after our certificate11:07
jelknerlol11:07
dcammueso we will resume on that next week11:07
jelkneri was going to say "try to run faster" ;-)11:08
jelknerdcammue: it is really important for you to take charge of that11:08
dcammueyes,11:08
jelknerif you time is limited, it is more important than attending JS classes11:08
dcammueokay, i will get ahead11:08
jelknerwe are counting on you to run the business side of things11:08
jelknerif we block on that, we're in trouble11:08
smohamudstandup: Interfaced with CJS and Stephen on requirements. Gained read access to NSS spreadsheet. Began going through data, writing questions and started data-definitions document to fill-in with engineering team. Approved/Merged two Gitlab Merge Requests for AMS. Taught JS class, created repo for materials.apologies for the delay. Blocked by not knowing data-definitions, will share an internal, private document with Engineering team to fill them in 11:09
smohamudas best we understand. Will run it by NSS after we do our best11:09
smohamud*done11:09
dcammueokay11:09
jelknerthanks smohamud 11:09
smohamudnp11:09
jelkneri had a good conversation with Stephen also11:09
smohamudanything to discuss now?11:09
smohamudawesoe.11:09
jelkneri begged and pleaded with him not to push evil corporate AI on us!11:09
smohamud^!11:10
jelknerhe agreed11:10
smohamudamazing.11:10
jelkneri told him it would undermine everything we are trying to do11:10
jelknerand send both resl and jelkner into a tizzy!!11:10
smohamudAs soon as possible, we shoud codify our AI-Usage policy so engineering team knows.11:10
jelkner+111:10
jelknerthis will be an ongoing conversation11:11
jelknerin the years ahead11:11
smohamud+111:11
jelknerthe landscape is changing so fast11:11
smohamudEarlier, we landed on having a eco-friendly server run open-source models that we customize for our needs.11:11
jelknerand it is so central to us as social justice techies in figuring out what we want11:11
smohamudBut that will take work... And we have a-lot of work to do...11:11
jelknersmohamud: China will be leading on development of those11:12
smohamud100%11:12
jelknerwe need to follow developments closely11:12
jelknerfor now, we know we need skills, human skills, no matter what the future holds11:12
smohamud100%11:12
jelknerso chris and i had a great conversation yesterday11:13
jelknerwe have so many Django apps we want for our classroom11:13
jelknerand as i mentioned, my dream is to have a group of progressive, skilled Django devs i can hire to work on them11:13
jelknerwe have CJS and Stephens app11:14
jelkneractually, we will soon be at the point where we have more work than we can handle11:14
jelknerthat's why i was glad to see gabriel here this morning11:14
jelknerone of the most exciting things about my month long visit to Mount Barclay was watching the Jetro team work together11:15
smohamudAwesome. Is Chris on the NWD mailing list members@novawebdevelopment?11:15
jelknerit brought joy to my heart to watch thomasboimah, dcammue, gabriel, jallah, and mulba working together11:16
jelknernow we need to find regular work for them, so they can earn what they need and have more time to devote to our efforts11:16
jelknerno, smohamud 11:16
jelknerbut he is on friends@novawebdevelopment.coop11:17
smohamudFreena and Janet have expressed interest in development work,, too.11:17
jelknerthat is great, smohamud 11:17
smohamudThey're attending classes.11:17
jelknerperfect!11:17
smohamudNext time, hope to see them in the mix, too :)11:17
jelknerfreena_, janet_ and dereck want to be the front-end team11:17
jelknerthey discussed that at one of the meetings i was invited to during my visit11:18
janet_+111:18
smohamudThey're on track.11:18
jelknerthomasboimah, gabriel and jallah are the back-end team11:18
jelknerbut these will blur, of course11:18
jelknerand dcammue shallon and jelkner are the business team11:19
jelknerdcammue: can we plan a meeting for Friday, 9/4 to go over our books?11:19

smohamudTo learn JavaScript11:22
jelknersmohamud: she has a lot on her plate11:22
svayeI can't join right now smohamud I have to focus on business11:23
jelknerit's fine to ask, but let's not be the straw that breaks the camel's back :-(11:23
jelknernice svaye 11:23
jelknerthanks!11:23
jelknerok all, this was great11:24
jelknersee you tomorrow at the same time and place, when zOnny will be here with us11:24
smohamudOur classes are purposely capped at about 1hr but shoot for 30-45m. If she would like to learn programming, we can also reallocate her work so it's fair to her interests.11:24
smohamudWe can figure it out, just want to make sure Shallon is where she wants to be.11:25
jelknersmohamud: i just tried to call you on signal11:25
jelkneryou didn't pick up11:25
smohamudDidn't ring...11:26

jelkner has quit (Quit: Leaving)11:36
smohamuddcammue: could you please create a Live Share link for us?11:37
dcammuehttps://prod.liveshare.vsengsaas.visualstudio.com/join?D027D25FDFA1B7117CFB48791364EC05578B11:37
smohamudThat was fast.11:37
smohamudThank you.11:37
smohamudPlease join the Live Share link. If you don't have it installed, please spend this time installing. We will begin in the meantime.11:38
smohamuddcammue - is your session still active?11:39
dcammuehttps://prod.liveshare.vsengsaas.visualstudio.com/join?95F18D8E454F7559DC626AE7D1A0D4762B1111:40
dcammuetry this11:40
smohamudWorks11:41
smohamudCan everyone join the session? It's just me and daniel.11:41
smohamudWe will have to create a system where someone creates the link before the standup, shares it to everyone, so the session is ready to go...11:42
smohamudJust me and Daniel in session still..11:42
smohamudthomas is in. 11:43
freena_I have small problem on my computer but i am fixing it 11:43
smohamudnp freena, if you want help feel free to ask.11:43
freena_It is a hardware problem11:43
smohamudwe will go from 2:45pm to about 3:15pm. I apologize to those with connectivity issues, but, not much we can do. If there's interest I can teach this class twice.11:44
smohamudThat's rough, Freena. Maybe try restarting11:45
smohamudOk, class is beginning.11:45
smohamudFolks in the Live Share: do you think logNamesWithGreeting will run or error?11:46
smohamudWelcome Jallah.11:46
smohamudAnyone want to give it a go?11:48
smohamuddcammmue: please open a shared terminal and prepare to run the script11:48
smohamud*My questions are meant to be answered with *current* knowledge. Getting it wrong is more valuable than getting right, because that's how learning happens.11:49
smohamudanyone here?11:50
thomasboimahsorry yes11:53
smohamudOk, anyone else?11:54
janet_yes11:54
smohamudwelcome Janet11:56
smohamudAre folks having connectivity issues? 11:57
freena_I'm done and can join now 11:57
smohamudAwesome. 11:57
smohamudOk - dcamme can you run the script please?11:57
jkoleahI'm here11:58
dcammueoaky11:58
smohamudThanks Daniel. As you can see, we're getting "Reference Error"12:01
dcammue https://prod.liveshare.vsengsaas.visualstudio.com/join?95F18D8E454F7559DC626AE7D1A0D4762B1112:01
dcammueonly for freena_ 12:01
jkoleah has quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)12:01
smohamudAccidentally had both uncommented. Can you run again so we can be confident?12:01
smohamudThat it's throwing a reference error to the one declared above.12:01
smohamudOk...That's what I expected.12:02
gabrieli am in smohamud12:02
smohamudFunction declarations are *special* because no matter where you declare it in the file, it will be in scope and execute!12:02
smohamudDid that surprise anyone?12:03
dcammueyes12:04
dcammuei want to know something12:04
dcammueyou call the function before defining the function12:04
smohamudWelcome gabriel12:04
smohamudYes, Daniel.12:04
dcammueand how does that work?12:05
smohamudSo, this is the "Hoisting" that we touched on a little last class.12:06
dcammueso that now you commented the function out, will it still run?12:07
smohamudBefore the program runs it will "Hoist" all the variables, function declarations to the *top* of the file.12:07
smohamudLet, var and const declared variables will result in various errors *but* they're the JS engine does register them at the top of the file. Function declarations are special because they're not only *hoisted* they're also *available* and will execute.12:08
smohamudLook at the bottom of the file.12:09
smohamudWe have one more call to the function on line 8512:10
smohamudRun the script again, let's see the output.12:10
dcammueso, that's mean a function can be call before its declaration right?12:10
smohamudYes, function declarations specifically can.12:11
smohamudWhen it's function(){ console.log("I am a function declaration")}12:11
smohamudBut, if there's ever a function assigned to a variable, as an expression, then, it will exist in a way but crucially it's not completely *initialized* 12:12
smohamudWhich means its value isn't there, even though it exists in the global scope. Let's try some examples real quick.12:14
smohamudDoes that help?12:14
smohamudAnd yes --- it ran, as expected.12:14
smohamudLet's move to another example.12:14
smohamudlogNamesWithGreetingAsExpression is uncommented12:15
smohamudQuick question: Who thinks this will run?12:16
dcammueyes, i think12:16
smohamudOk, anyone else?12:17
dcammuefrom what you just explain12:17
fkoikoismohamud, I am not really understanding what you are saying since I am a beginner and just started today. Can I skip this session and go read a bit on JavaScript so that I can know exactly what you are teaching and will also be able to ask questions in the next class too.12:17
smohamudfkoikoi: thank you for sharing that. I am currently writing up a survey to ask what experience everyone has, so this problem won't happen next week.12:17
smohamudWe're almost done, you can head out if you'd like and self-study.12:18
smohamudnobody else wants to answer whether this will run or not?12:18
smohamuddcammue, please run the script and let's see.12:18
fkoikoiokay, thanks for understanding smohamud 12:19
smohamudof course.12:19
dcammueits not12:19
smohamuddcammue, little surprised?12:19
dcammuenot really, because i noticed something from the both example12:20
dcammueexamples12:20
smohamudI thought you expected it to log out all the names?12:20
smohamudMore importantly, what did you noticce?12:20
dcammueone is a declared by the function scope12:20
dcammueand the other is by the const12:20
dcammuewhich the const declared a variable and then assigned it to the function12:22
smohamudGreat observation! I changed the expression to use "var"12:22
smohamudWill this run?12:22
thomasboimahyes12:23
dcammueno, because i think the function was introduced by a variable12:23
smohamudOoo, this is juicy :)12:24
smohamudLet's run it.12:24
thomasboimahhmm12:24
smohamudStill not defined.12:25
smohamudAnd Daniel honed in on why - it's a function expression and cannot be called *before* it's declared.12:26
smohamudOk comrades, it's 3:30pm. We're getting better each time but we have to stick to our max 1 hour class time.12:27
smohamudWe have a few m for questions now but please email questions between now and Monday. I will be sending the Survey out and a short HW assignment. 12:28
thomasboimahI though the function was called after being declared12:28
dcammuecan we try to change the variable declaration to function scope to see if it could run?12:28
smohamudAh, nope it was above Thomas.12:28
smohamudGreat idea Daniel, let's make this the last example. Can you make that change and then we see if it runs?12:29
thomasboimahgotcha12:29
thomasboimahyou12:29
smohamudThen, run it. Do you expect it to run or not?12:29
thomasboimahit will run 12:30
smohamudQuick check -- who's watching the session now?12:30
thomasboimahwaut12:30
thomasboimahwaut12:30
thomasboimahwait?12:30
smohamudDid the file get saved?12:31
thomasboimahwhere I we going to called it? above or below the function12:31
smohamudDcammue - can you run the script?12:31
thomasboimah*are12:31
smohamudWe are calling it on line 10, before it's declared.12:31
smohamuddcamme can you type "clear" into the console12:32
smohamudthen, run it again. I think Live Share is a little buggy12:32
smohamudI think it's a syncing issue. Daniel, can you add to a comment.12:34
smohamudThen, save the file. Then, run again.12:34
smohamudThomas and I have saved and it might take a sec...12:34
smohamudOk, uncomment that line and run again.12:34
smohamudand *save*12:35
smohamudThis is buggy... After the session, copy the script locally and run it again...12:35
smohamudI'll look into why it's happening. As a function declaration, it should be binded and initialized (ready to be called without error) before it's declared.12:36
smohamudExperiment with it between now and next class.12:37
smohamudAny last questions for me before we meet Monday?12:37
smohamudGreat job today. I will see you Monday. Be on lookout for the "Programming Experience" survey and Monday's homework for those who are currently caught up.12:39
smohamudHave a great rest of your day. Amazing questions and don't worry about the undefined... I'll find out why the terminal isn't reading the latest file...12:40
smohamudAs a reminder: I'm always available for email questions if you get stuck self-studying.12:40
smohamudFound the bug...12:41
dcammuei tried it in my local terminal and it run12:41
smohamudLol12:41
smohamudDoes anyone see the bug on line 10?12:42
dcammueso the code has bugs12:42
smohamudThe bug was that we called it as logNamesWithGreeting(s)AsExpression 12:43
smohamudthe function name is logNamesWithGreetingAsExpression. There's no "s"12:43
smohamudRun it now...12:43
smohamudThat said -- we have a-lot to do and the session has gone over comrades.12:43
smohamudWith any questions, please don't hesitate to message the group chat or email me.12:44
smohamudAgain, great job today!12:44
dcammueokay, i will try to run and find the bug12:45
smohamudgreat idea.12:46
